Facts

Achelousaurus was a herbivorous dinosaur first described by paleontologist D. Scott Sampson in 1995, based on its fossil remains discovered in Montana (USA), in North America.

By its impressive appearance, this prehistoric animal is very similar to the dinosaur Pachyrhinosaurus and the dinosaur Einiosaurus – both were herbivores and lived in wooded areas, and their obvious capillary adornments were intended to attract females during the Ruth period.

The achelousaurus had a very well developed posterior Shield of the head, provided with two slits that greatly diminished its weight. Above the eyes it had two bony protrusions, and on the nose instead of the curved horn (which occurs in Einiosaurus) it had another bony protrusion of elongated shape.

The shield was provided with two large horns, sharp at the top and curved to the sides. It seems that they had a defense role, as did the bony protrusions, and the large shield is suspected to change color to impress the females more during the mating period.

The body was huge, reaching 6 m in length and 3 m in height, the tail was robust and long, held horizontally to balance its body weight. The hind limbs were slightly larger than the forelimbs, but they were all strong and muscular, ending with sturdy fingers and hoofed claws, perfectly adapted to support the entire weight of the body.

Considering that he had such a sturdy and heavy body, his gait was definitely on all four limbs. When in danger they probably defend themselves with the help of the two sharp horns of the shield, causing very serious injuries to the predatory dinosaurs, especially in the abdominal area.

Food Of Achelousaurus

Being a herbivorous animal it certainly lived in areas with a lot of vegetation, forested, and its food was composed of plants at ground level and the tender leaves of trees, which it tore with its large beak with sharp edges and chewed with strong teeth on the jaws.

These dinosaurs lived in flocks and migrated over very long distances, hundreds of kilometers.

This dinosaur lived in the Mesozoic era, in the Upper Cretaceous, 75 million years ago.
