Facts

Origin

It can be found in Waimea Canyon State Park, Alaka am Wilderness conservation, and Koke e State Park.

It is currently classified as endangered, with the number of specimens decreasing due to habitat modification.

Akekee Food

It feeds on insects, buds or nectar of some trees.

Akekee Features

It is a greenish-yellow bird with a black mask around its eyes, more prominent in males, with a light blue beak, sometimes darker at the tip.

It has only 11cm and a conical beak.

Apart from its simplicity and beauty, it has a peculiar chirping of singing birds.

Akekee Breeding

Due to the change of habitat introducing new species of trees and animals, this bird perishes and this not only because of the fauna but also because of mosquitoes.

Because it lives in areas where it is difficult to reach or study and is an endangered species with only a few thousand specimens left at the last census, little is known about this bird.
