The history of the American Shorthair cat begins in 1620 when pilgrims on the ship Mayflower had cats on board to protect their supplies.

They left the UK and took the British Shorthair to North America. Meanwhile the breed has undergone some changes by mating with local cats.

Hunting skills made sailors appreciate them for the effectiveness with which they caught mice and rats.

In 1895, the American Shorthair cat appeared at the first contest organized for feline lovers, and the breed was officially recognized in 1906.

Appearance American Shorthair Cat

It has a muscular and strong body, short ears, a round head and is fluffy. Large and alert eyes are of different colors from yellow to green.

Short fur almost does not need maintenance.

It comes in 80 colors and designs including solid, Brindle, calico, and others. Calico is a tri-color variation (tricolor) in which most specimens are female.

The colors that have made it popular and in which it can be found the most are gray with black.

At maturity it reaches the weight of 7-8 kg. Males are larger and heavier than females.
