The aquarium perch (Serranus cabrilla) belongs to the order Perciformes, the family Serranidae and the genus Serranus.
It can be found in the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Black Sea and Crimea. It may also be present in our waters.
Feeding aquarium perch
In the wild it feeds on other fish, cephalopods and crustaceans.
It is supposed to be omnivorous.
Appearance aquarium perch
At maturity it reaches 10 – 25 cm in length. In the natural environment it can reach the size of 40 cm. Like other species of fish, the back is darker and the belly is almost white.
On the body it has about 10 vertical reddish-brown stripes, and on the belly it has 2-3 reddish stripes parallel along the body.
Behavior aquarium perch
Not being a large fish it prefers shallow waters with depths between 0 and 200 meters.
It is a fairly active fish, which swims daily in search of prey considerable distances.
