The Asian black bear (Selenarctos Thibetanus), also known as Ursus thibetanus, tibetan black bear, himalayan black bear or moon bear, is a medium-sized mammal with sharp claws and black fur.
It has a distinctive sign on the chest, shaped like the letter V, white or cream color, which is why, in some areas, it is called "bears of the moon". It can be found in Afghanistan, Pakistan, northern India, Nepal, the Kingdom of Bhutan, Burma, southern Siberia in Russia, Taiwan and Japan.
Feeding Asian Black Bear
They feed mainly at night and sleep during the day; nocturnal activity intensifies during autumn. They are strong swimmers and easily climb trees (they have short claws).
They move on all fours, but during a fight they use their front paws to hit the enemy, while leaning on their hind paws. Avoid humans and attack only if they defend their young or if they are injured.
The area of the Asian black bear varies greatly, from 6.4 or 9.7 square km to about 16.4 or 36.5 square km. Its territory depends very much on the availability of food: the more food it has at its disposal, the smaller its territory is.
The moon bear is an omnivorous animal , eating nuts, acorns, grains, forest apples, as well as honey, insects and carrion. Sometimes they hunt sheep or mountain goats.
Asian Black Bear Appearance
The sizes of the Asian black bear differ: males have between 100 and 200 kg, and females have 65 to 90 kg.
They can measure between 120 and 180 cm, from the top of the head to the tail, the tail being short (6.5-10.6 cm).
The head of the Asian black bear is large and round. The ears are big and the eyes are small.
Asian Black Bear Behavior
Most socialization and breeding information is gathered based on their behavior in zoos, as very little is known about how they behave in the wild.
The asian black bear is diurnal. They are good rock climbers and tree climbers. They climb trees for food, sun, to escape their pursuers and for hibernation. I spend a lot of my time in the trees.
Breeding Asian Black Bear
It is not known for certain what is the interval between mating periods; however, it is assumed that mating could take place at 2-3 years, since the chicks stay next to the mother for 2-3 years.
They breed from June to October and the female gives birth to an average of two cubs. The Asian black bear is capable of breeding at the age of 3-4 years, while the gestation period is 7-8 months.
