Facts

Origin

It occurs frequently in our country, as a passerine bird. It can be seen during the summer, and some stay and winter with us.

Several specimens have been seen hatching in the Tisa plain and in Bulgaria. In Germany it is called the GOAT of the sky, because during the mating period, it performs zigzag flights, and the noise made by the vibration of the large feathers of the wings resembles the voice of the goat.

It belongs to the order Charadriiformes, family Scolopacidae and is not an endangered species. It's also called snipe bird.

Food Becatina

It feeds on mollusks, plants, worms, crustaceans, seeds, insects and insect larvae. It goes in search of food mostly at dusk and less during the day.

Features Becatina

It has a thin and long beak, a slightly flattened head laterally, brown eyes, rather long and greenish legs.

The eyes located on the sides of the head allow a very wide field of vision. The plumage is brown with longitudinal stripes and various shades of rust, tan and cream.

The abdomen is white, and on the sides it has shades of brown, yellow and brown. The tail consists of 14-16 feathers and has an irregular shape with white, tan and brown bands. The adult bird reaches a length of 25-28 cm, a weight of 240-250 g and a wingspan of 48 cm.

Breeding Becatina

It makes its nest in tall grass or reeds. The female hatches alone a total of four eggs, Oval, gray color, which she lays between April and may.

The male stays near the nest. After a period of 20 days, chicks emerge that are initially dependent on the mother bird. Only after four or five weeks do they manage to fly.

He lives about 12 years. They can often be seen flying in small groups. When it feels in danger, it crouches on the ground, crouches in vegetation, or flies very quickly.
