Origin
According to specialists, it was discovered in 1884 by Carl Hunstein, the name being given in memory of the unlucky Prince Rudolph of Austria.
Because of the limited region, the small number of specimens and the hunting (for its extraordinary plumage) the Blue Bird of paradise has been classified as a vulnerable species and red-listed among protected animals.
Bird of Paradise Food
Bluebirds of paradise feed on fruit, which they find in abundance in New Guinea. The generous amount of food allows birds to channel their energy elsewhere.
Thus, they devote most of their time to coquetry, developing a rich plumage with which to charm their partners.
Features Bird of paradise
The species measures about 30cm long and has a black head, beak and head. It has grey legs and blue wings.
In the case of the male, the tail is extended by two long and thin "antennae".
The biggest threat is habitat loss and hunting of the bird for feathers. The remaining habitat is also under threat as a result of agricultural land development due to increasing human population numbers.
There are still some areas where it has not been penetrated but it is not known for how long.
Breeding Bird of paradise
Males are polygamous and court females by flaunting their spectacular plumage and making calling sounds. The mating song is so rhythmic that the Blue Bird of paradise is considered a soloist in the true sense of the word.
To make the spectacle as attractive as possible, the males hang on the branches of trees, with their heads down and their wings spread so that their blue feathers spread around the body, like a fan. Birds swing their bodies back and forth, and the two long "strings" in the tail area Arch in an impressive way.
