Origin
The origins of these races are still uncertain and are lost in the mists of the past. "Boer" in the African language means farmer, and it is assumed that this was a farmer's dog.
Some sources assume that this dog dates back to the time of Alexander the great, when such large and powerful dogs were used for hunting and fighting with other animals.
Other sources assume the origins of this breed much later, namely when Jan van Riebeek arrived in the Cape in 1652, he would have brought with him some massive dogs similar to those of the Mastiff type.
Later European settlers also brought such dogs, which crossed with local dogs resulted in today's Boerbeol. In 1830 these mugs were mostly hounds as they accompanied European settlers on the great journey over a distance of more than 1400 km (870 miles) from the Cape to Gauteg.
Today's boerboel has largely retained its physical characteristics, but is now a family dog with a gentle and protective behavior, not a hunting or fighting dog.[1]
It is known by various names: Boerboel, african Boerboel, african Mastiff, South African Boerboel or South African Mastiff.
Boerboel Food
Some breeders believe that the correct diet for boerboel consists mostly of bones and raw meat. They believe that this way of feeding does not cause the dog to become aggressive but is the best way to feed a carnivore. Dogs and puppies absorb nutrients better from raw meat because this is how the stomach of the K9 dog species was designed.
This is probably one of the reasons why it has been banned in several countries, including Romania. It is true that when food is cooked at high temperatures, much of the nutrients are lost. Breeders compensate with vitamins this but unfortunately synthetic vitamins.
If they are fed low-quality commercial food they can get sick, their stomach is prone to bloating. Feeding dogs with bones not only provides them with calcium, but the hardness of the chips has the same effect as a dental brushing, helping to remove bacterial plaque.
If you can't afford the costs of feeding your dog with bone-based food and raw meat, think that if you don't feed him properly, you have to pay to go with him to the vet.
If you feed him with cooked food (inappropriate) or commercial you have to buy his mouth products not to smell because of bacterial plaque and especially take him to a veterinarian to be cleaned, so other money.
Rather than putting money into medicines, surgeries and other miracles, do you not better provide them with a healthy food from the beginning ? The dog, in general, is not picky, all he wants is food, water, a place to play and do his exercises(courtship) and affection.
