Origin

It is an ancient breed bred by Russian nobles who possessed whole crews with such dogs to hunt wolves, foxes and hares. Their origin is very old and there are many opinions about their lineage. It is possible that it is the descendant of the Russian Deerhound, Tatra Hare greyhounds and Ovcharka.

Other opinions claim that during the seventeenth century a Russian Grand Duke imported some Saluki from Arabia and crossed them with Collie dogs, then with greyhounds from Crimea and the Caucasus. The most famous breeding of this breed was the one in Perchino of Grand Duke Nicholas of Russia, which had over 200 very beautiful barzoi Greyhounds.

In Western Europe they appeared only in the middle of the XIX century. Queen Victoria of England was the first to possess a copy. Then it became very popular and widespread in France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and other countries.

The breed almost disappeared in Russia with the revolution of 1917, because it was associated with the ruling class, with the Russian nobility. Fortunately, there were plenty of copies in Europe at the time.

Borzoi Food

Dogs of this breed complete their growth between the ages of 9-12 months, so it is essential to establish a diet that helps them develop their bones and fur.

Very important is not to spoil them with too many preserves or other special food, because they are lustful and you will get along with them hard.

A lower calorie meal should not scare you because, although they are larger, dogs of this breed are light, so, properly educated, they are not large consumers of food.

Appearance Borzoi

It is a large dog, supple, but at the same time graceful and strong. The head is long, narrow, the skull flat, slightly elongated, a straight, long, narrow, almost non-stop snout, nose large and black. The eyes are almond-shaped, rather close-set, dark in color.

The ears are hooked up, towards the back, relatively small, thin, sharp at the tip. When the animal is resting they stand above the neck in the form of a Rose, and when the animal is in action they are worn straight with the tip pointing forward.

The neck is long, muscular, and the back is slightly curved, rounding to the side of the halls. The hind legs are more muscular than the front ones, allowing it to reach considerable speeds. The tail is caught low, long, in the form of a sickle or sword, resting or raised to the level of the back in action.

The coat has a hair of medium length, soft, slightly wavy or with large curls. It is especially abundant around the neck, on the chest, on the hind legs and on the tail. It is shorter on the head, ears and anterior part of the legs. It can be of any color or combination of colors.

Borzoi Behavior

It is an intelligent dog, brave, energetic, proud, gentle, reserved, quiet, calm in the house, sometimes independent, stubborn.

He is devoted to his master, reserved and suspicious of strangers, accepting children but not playing partners.

If they are socialized from an early age with other dogs or other animals in the household it tends to accept them, but will hunt any animal (smaller dog, cat or anything else) that runs.

He barks a little, even at strangers.

The coat of this dog needs regular brushing and combing. The hair between the pads of the feet should be removed.

Dressage Borzoi

The training of this dog should be done by an experienced person, since it is not very obedient.

With a firm, consistent training, without being harsh or severe satisfactory results are obtained.

Features Borzoi

It is a dog that feels good in a confined space where it can move freely and is more difficult to accommodate in an apartment. It is recommended to an active person with experience in dog breeding.

If the house is quiet, outside he needs movement, he likes walks, he likes to run (he runs with a typical gallop in high jumps) in the open field or beside a bicycle.

It should be borne in mind that he has a habit of grabbing whatever prey he sees. He needs socialization.

It is used to hunt small or larger animals, can participate in dog races, is a good watchman and a quiet companion.

Borzoi Diseases

The health problems encountered more often in a Barzoi are joint inflammation and metabolic diseases of the bones. They are known to be very sensitive to barbiturates, flea-fighting substances or anesthetics.

You will have to prepare a soft bedding to prevent bone inflammation generated by sleeping on a harder surface.

Otherwise, the susceptibility to getting sick is extremely low being, as I said, dogs that are extremely resistant to diseases.
