The camel (Camelus) is a large animal found in North Africa and Asia used for transportation in desert regions.
The similarity of the dunes in the desert with the waves of the sea as well as the swaying gait of the camels has led her to be referred to as the "ship of the desert".
The number of camels is estimated at about 19 million, of which almost 15 million live in Africa(only in Somalia Live 7 million and in Sudan 3 million camels).
Camel Food
The camel is adapted to desert life when it has to travel long distances without food or water.
For this camel must accumulate as a reserve a large amount of food and water. In the hump it can accumulate food in the form of fat, with which it can withstand without feeding for 30 days.
The water reserve of a camel accumulated in the stomach reaches an amount between 100-150 liters, enough quantity for two weeks. Camel can drink in 10 minutes an amount of 100 liters of water.
Camila Appearance
There are known 2 types of camels: the Dromader (or Arabian camel) which has a single hump and is found mostly in the desert and the Bactrian camel which has 2 cocks.
The camel is distinguished from other animals by its large waist, having a height of 2.2 – 3.5 m and weight of 300 to 700 gk and by the fact that it has one or two cocks.
Camels have a relatively short tail (35-55cm), the color of the coat has shades from dark brown to sandy reddish gray.
The legs of camels in relation to the size of the body are long, they step on two fingers that are not covered by the hoof but only by a bent nail that protects the toes that on the sole have a suspension system made of a soft tissue.
Animals have a long head and neck, a split upper lip, and eyes with long protective eyelashes. The orifices of the nostrils may close, and the stomach of camels is as in other ruminants compartmentalized in prestomace.
Camel Behavior
It is said that the camel's caretaker forces the animal to drink a large amount of water before leaving. But the theory that a water supply would be humpback is false.
Although many animals die if they lose a quarter of their body weight, camels can lose almost half their body weight without serious consequences.
Due to the conditions that it has adapted so well to the need the camel can drink Willow or salty water.
In order to defend itself from enemies, the camel uses its mouth to bite or even spit, and if the danger is great it ends up trampling its attackers.
Camel Breeding
Camels live in the harem. The gestation period in camels is between 340 – 440 days, the baby camel becoming in a short period of time independent and able to run.
At the age of 1 year it is weaned and at the age of 2-3 years it becomes fit for reproduction.
He can live 40 to 50 years.
