Chasmosaurus | Discover Fascinating Facts and Information About Chasmosaurus

Based on his fossil remains discovered in New Mexico (USA) in 1902, Canadian paleontologist Lawrence M. Lambe made a description of him only in 1914 and named him Chasmosaurus belli. In 1940 Charles Sternberg Mortram presented a new species Chasmosaurus russelli whose fossilized bones were discovered in southwestern Alberta. A few years later, based on several additional skulls that were discovered, a new species was described – named Chasmosaurus irvinensis.

Facts

Chasmosaurus was a herbivorous dinosaur that, like Centrosaurus, had an original, enormous collar that started from the head and reached above the shoulders. This prehistoric animal lived in the Mesozoic era, in the Upper Cretaceous, about 70 million years ago.

The fact that several clustered bones belonging to different specimens were found in Alberta (Canada) shows that these dinosaurs lived in large herds, probably led by a leader who dominated them.

Paleontologists estimated the length of this dinosaur to be 5.2 m and weight to be 3.5 tons. When in danger, the rectangular headplate, garnished on the edges with short and robust horns like Saw teeth, acted as a defense, scaring off certain predators only by the fact that it was so large, it exceeded the length of the head.

The weight of this shield was somewhat reduced by the fact that it had two openings of the bone structure, covered with thick and resistant skin.

In the area above the eyes were positioned two large and curved horns, and on the nose a third horn, smaller and less pointed than the others. The thick and powerful snout ends with a horny beak and devoid of teeth. The large jaws were provided with strings of teeth that if they broke or fell were replaced by others, which grew underneath. The interesting thing about these dinosaurs is that their teeth had double roots – something only present in horned dinosaurs.

The large orbits of 122 mm led researchers to believe that the sight of these dinosaurs was well developed. Also, the bones of the Hind and forelimbs were massive, well adapted to support the entire weight of the body. Their gait was quadrupedal, their long tail hung while walking, and their running speed was a maximum of 20 km/h.

When they were attacked their method of defense was as follows: they formed a circle within which the Cubs were protected, and on the edges stood the stronger animals, so the predator had no chance. The males were quite violent during the mating season, fighting each other for supremacy in the herd or conquering the females.
