The Chamois is a fascinating and unique animal in the wild. Its name comes from its shape, similar to a pillar or column, due to its imposing size and posture. This animal exclusively lives in isolated mountainous parts of Romania, on the rocky slopes of the Carpathians.

The Chamois is also known as the "living rock" due to its ability to perfectly camouflage itself in the surrounding landscape. Its scientific name is Columus carpatium and it belongs to the class of mammals.

This impressive mammal has an imposing stature, being one of the largest land animals in Romania. An adult Chamois can reach up to 2 meters in height and weigh over 500 kilograms. It has a strong constitution and a well-developed musculature, adapted to withstand extreme conditions.

The Chamois has a thick and rough fur, dark brown in color, which allows it to blend in with the colors of the stones and rocks in which it lives. This is an important defense mechanism against predators and a method through which it can easily observe and attack its prey.

The Chamois is a herbivorous species, mainly feeding on vegetation specific to mountainous areas. It feeds on fresh grass, moss, stems, and branches found in the high-altitude areas where it lives. It is an animal with a remarkable ability to adapt to the available food resources in its natural environment.

Chamois reproduction takes place during the summer, in the peak period of vegetation in those areas. Males fight for dominance and to conquer females. These fights are impressive and spectacular, with confrontations between males that clash and collide with their horns to gain the right to reproduce. Chamois have impressive horns, which can measure up to one meter in height and play a crucial role in male dominance.

Another fascinating aspect of the Chamois is its communication. It emits specific sounds to attract the attention of those around and to mark its territory. The sounds can vary from short snorts to powerful bellows.

Unfortunately, the Chamois population is constantly declining. These magnificent mammals are threatened by poaching and the destruction of their natural habitat caused by massive deforestation and urban development. Although they are protected by local and international legislation, poaching remains a major problem in the conservation of this species.

It is important to take measures to protect this species and their natural habitat. Implementing conservation policies and educating the public about the importance of preserving the Chamois in the wild are essential aspects of conservation efforts.

The Chamois is certainly an amazing and valuable animal for the mountain ecosystem in Romania. We can contribute to its conservation by supporting organizations and projects dedicated to the protection of this species and their natural environment.

Facts

The surprising series of presentation of animals known to our ancestors continues with none other than the wild Mongolian donkey (Equus hemionus hemionus) or the colun, whose western populations lived on the Romanian territories, as attested by a series of osteological, Botanical, toponymic, historical and popular evidence. In the cemetery of Hamangia culture from Cernavoda were discovered the remains of six colonies.

Other villages with the same name are in the counties of Vaslui, Bacau, Botosani, Soroca (in Bessarabia). In Wallachia, the wild donkey was known and hunted in today's counties Dambovita, Buzau, Olt and Ilfov.

The early disappearance of the wild Mongolian donkey or colun from the fauna of our country is due to the improvement of weapons, the crossbow first of all, followed by the large-scale belonging of firearms. We can not know for sure when the colun disappeared from the Romanian territories.

The fact that Dimitrie Cantemir knows him, but does not include him among the animals in Descriptio Moldaviae, is an additional argument that this species of wild donkey disappeared at the end of the seventeenth century. The folk tradition has found in several Teleorman villages the ancient custom of using colun dung in smoking and enchantments.

The colun is in danger of total extinction at present. Herds in the Badkis and Barsa Kelmes reserves in Kazakhstan have been decimated by poachers. In 2008, there were about 4,500 colonies in reserves in Mongolia and northern China.
