Malaysian earth tiger (Cyriopagopus schioedtei), meaning the Malaysian Earth Tiger is part of
Species: schioedtei. It can be found under the names: Malaysian Earth Tiger or Asian Chevron Tarantula. The distribution area includes the peninsular area of Malaysia. The habitat is confined strictly to tropical forests, usually found in trees or in rock fissures.
Food Cyriopagopus schioedtei
In the wild the diet includes birds, insects, small rodents and any other prey it can hunt. In captivity they are usually fed on Beetles, crickets, worms, grasshoppers and the occasional pinky. They are opportunistic hunters and at the same time have a voracious appetite.Features Cyriopagopus schioedtei
Cyriopagopus schioedtei was described by Thorell in 1891. It is an arboreal tarantula, adult specimens reaching sizes between 20-22 cm. The carapace reaches 3 cm in diameter. Males have an olive green coloration with yellow striations, while females have a black coloration with red bristles and green carapace. The chicks stay hidden in the substrate but as they grow they begin to develop more and more arboreal behavior. It is not a recommended species for beginners because they are very fast and have a fairly potent venom. Life expectancy is between 8-10 years.
Being an Asian species, the specimens of this species do not possess hives, to compensate for the lack of this defense mechanism the venom of this species is somewhat more potent than that of the New World species.
Terrarium
Considering that it is an arboreal species, the height of the terrarium is more important than the length and width, a terrarium of 30 cm long, 30 cm wide and 40 cm high being the minimum necessary to host an adult specimen.
The optimum temperature should be between 22-28 grC and the air humidity is recommended to be between 70-80%. The substrate usually used is coconut, as it retains moisture best.
The terrarium must be equipped with a hiding place, which can mimic a hollow log inside, to imitate the natural habitat as well as possible and give the tarantula the opportunity to hide when it feels threatened. It is recommended to equip the terrarium with a vessel with water to help maintain humidity.
Venom
All species of tarantulas possess venom. Although it is not very potent, bites are never placute.De like any species of tarantula and Cyriopagopus schioedtei can be unpredictable and a bite can occur at any time.
For these reasons we recommend maximum attention when the tarantula is fed, moved or when its terrarium is cleaned.
It is not recommended to handle tarantulas, especially by those without experience.
Reproduction Cyriopagopus schioedtei
They have a fast growth rate, reaching maturity around the age of 2 years. The species shows sexual dimorphism, sexing can be done according to the specific colors of each genus, listed above. The female lays an egg-bag that will contain an average of 100-150 eggs that will hatch within 2-3 months of laying. in the wild the mating season is in autumn.
