Origin

Based on the silhouettes of these dogs, found on some carved stones in Scotland, it is assumed that they are over 2000 years old and even more.

It is believed to have the same ancestry as the Irish Wolfhound. The name comes from the word deer because it was used to hunt deer by the Scottish nobility.

It has been praised and described in works and poems by several writers, including Walter Scott who had a female of this breed named Maida and whom he described as "a perfect creature from heaven".

Later it suffered a decline, but lovers of this breed managed to revive it. They're still pretty rare.

Deerhound Feed

The diet of a specimen of this breed must be severely monitored, because, during the period when it is a puppy, it tends to grow very quickly.

Deerhound Appearance

It is a large, powerful dog, has a long head, quite wide between the ears and flat, a tapered muzzle and adorned with a mustache and beard, with a black nose.

The eyes are medium in size, dark or hazelnut in color. The ears are set high, small, velvety and are bent with a slight fold towards the back when at rest and raised above the head without losing the fold when in action.

It has a long and strong neck. The tail is long, almost touching the ground, conically formed and keeps it resting and raised in motion. The coat has a medium-length, rough, coarse hair, a little longer on the belly, chest and head.

The most common color is blue to dark gray, but it can be yellow, light gray, red, tan or red mixed with black and white. May have white spots on the chest, paws.

Deerhound Behavior

It is an intelligent, brave, gentle, sensitive dog, barks quite a bit.

He is affectionate, devoted to the master, quite caring with children, attentive to strangers, but not particularly alert.

It has a strong hunting instinct and can cause problems with other animals.

It is used to hunt large wild animals (deer, antelopes) and as a pet.

Deerhound Training
