Origin

Lagotto romagnolo is an ancient, rudimentary and authentic breed. His story takes shape in the mists of time somewhere in the sixteenth century, in the central regions of Italy (Comacchio and Ravenna). In the marshes here, these dogs were used to feed small game from the water (especially waders). Sharp smell and agility helped them in this.

Towards the eighteenth century, the swamps began to be drained to make way for arable land. Thus our dog was left without the activity that consecrated him and was re-profiled by breeders who inoculated another talent: the discovery of truffles.

The highly developed smell allowed him to feel the precious mushrooms hiding deep in the soil. As a result, the Breed grew even more in the eyes of enthusiasts at the time. Popular in Italy, the dog began to be exported to neighboring countries, throughout Europe and even overseas.

However, the Breeders did nothing to draw up a standard and officially register the breed. Only in 1995, at the initiative of the FCI (International Kennel Federation), Lagotto romagnolo was officially recognized as a thoroughbred.

Around 1900, breeders began to make a counter - selection of the breed trying to build two lines: one for hunting and one for searching truffles. Why this?! Lagotto was very easy to train to look for mushrooms, but when he arrived in the forest, the hunting instinct made him easily distracted from the surrounding ones, the dog being more difficult to control.

So it was tried to inhibit the hunting instinct in favor of the seeker. But it was not entirely successful; it is very hard to remove an instinct that has accompanied the dog for 400 years and replace it with a freshly assigned one (the truffles).

Lagotto Romagnolo

As with other races we start with what is not allowed. Perhaps the biggest poison is chocolate. And not because there are no more toxic foods and simply because they come into contact most often. Many dog owners offer sweets, ice cream, and other dog-like foods not knowing they are hurting them.

If you have a dog whose future interests you, it is important to know how to take care of him. This, besides food, includes movement, grooming, training, etc.returning to food you can not give him what you eat. Besides chocolate and sweets, dogs have other needs than humans. The diet of many dogs, and I mean here a correct diet, we can not establish in the House.

A correct diet is established according to the breed, the age of the dog, the level of activity, the average daily effort, etc.it is recommended both cooked food and dry food, canned or in other forms from the store as long as it has in its composition the necessary and sufficient nutritional food for the dog.

Attention that we have specified enough food, if you put in the dog bowl food "to be" it most of the time will tend to obesity, and this can lead to health problems.

As you probably know this water dog from Italy is a good truffle seeker.

Appearance Lagotto Romagnolo

Lagotto romagnolo is a medium-sized dog, well proportioned, muscular, with a body that can be framed in a square. The head is relatively large and is supported by a thick and strong neck.

The eyes are round and large, the color palette is generous: different shades of Brown and even dark orange, depending on the color of the coat. Scissor bite. The triangular ears have rounded tips and are borne on the head.

Fur is a feature of the breed. Like the poodle, Lagotto does not shed, being considered a hypoallergenic dog. The fur is dense, soft and curly.

Their hair often protects them from the potential stings of barbs in the bushes they roam in search of truffles. Many color variants are accepted, from full white to rust, shades of brown, rust and white, etc.

Females: height (36 - 41 cm); Weight (11 - 14 kg).

Behavior Lagotto Romagnolo

No doubt it is a working dog that does its best to please its owner. It is also an affectionate and loyal, friendly dog, thus becoming a true family dog.

It is relatively easy to train. It's a smart dog that needs to be busy all the time. If not stimulated enough, it becomes bored and can become destructive. It gets along with other animals if it is socialized as a child.

He has developed senses, even that of property, so he will signal when someone steps on the territory, making him a good guard dog. They are good swimmers and most of them love water.

They like to dig and they can destroy your garden. Give your dog a special place to dig and you will get rid of problems. Even if you do not use your Lagotto to search for truffles, still do not refuse games like "search-find objects". They like to be stimulated in this way.

Lagotto needs a lot of exercise, having a natural instinct to look for things. He likes to walk around his master, needing to walk every day. He also loves to swim as a water dog.

Dressage Lagotto Romagnolo

Whether they are puppies, young or adults, all dogs belonging to the breed must be trained. Sessions should be only 5-10 minutes because of the short attention span. Training should take place in a free zone without distractions.

It is preferable to perform modern training using the reward system, a technique used by trainers for most breeds. The food used as a reward must be made up of small and extremely tasty pieces that the animal can enjoy every time it receives a piece.

For effective training, the dog should receive a glimpse each time he gives an answer or performs a correct movement, accompanied, obviously, by words of praise.

Patience is essential in the proper training of the dog. If you are nervous, frustrated, etc., it is recommended not to start training. Dogs are sensitive to emotions and may misunderstand commands.

Punishing or hitting your dog is not only not recommended, but your dog can catch your fear and this makes training difficult or in some cases impossible. Use a friendly voice.

Don't yell. Always use simple and clear commands, spoken firmly. Do not change commands and do not give them wrong because the animal will get into a state of confusion and will not know what to do.

Features Lagotto Romagnolo

This dog does not shed, but that does not mean that it does not need care. Periodically the ringlets must be brushed, otherwise they can be infringed.

Twice a year, the hair is trimmed. Curly hair tends to accumulate dirt more easily, the bath is needed from time to time. The hair in the ears is periodically taken care of to prevent infection.

Due to its waist, Lagotto can be an excellent apartment dog, but also a yard dog because it is not very picky. It feels good in the apartment if it is walked daily 3-4 times (short walks) or 1-2 long walks.

The flower garden can suffer if the quadruped does not have a sand pit of his own. In summer, give him the pleasure of a bath in the lake or pool.

Boli Lagotto Romagnolo

Old Breed, Lagotto romagnolo is a healthy, Hardy dog that lives up to 16 years. Hip dysplasia and epilepsy are more common in this breed.
