Mosasaurus | Discover Fascinating Facts and Information About Mosasaurus

It was part of the group of mosasaurs that developed in the Cretaceous and resembled the dinosaurs Hainosaurus and Tylosaurus, but was much larger and more robust than these. It seems that Mosasaurus was the last representative of the family and one of the most impressive.Fossil remains of this animal have been discovered in Europe, Nigeria, Morocco, North America. It seems to have lived 70-65 million years ago, in the Mesozoic era, during the Upper Cretaceous period. His living environment was exclusively on the high seas.

Facts

According to paleontologists, the Mosasaurus dinosaur was actually a huge lizard, with a body length of 9-12 m and weight of 20 tons, perfectly adapted to swim in the sea similar to a snake. It had a huge, elongated, serpentiform body, and instead of legs it had relatively short flipper fins compared to its body size.

This prehistoric animal was described in 1822 by paleontologist William Daniel Conybeare, and after a long study of the fossil remains – teeth and vertebrae of different shapes – it was concluded that there were several species: Mosasaurus conodon, Mosasaurus hoffmanni, Mosasaurus dekayi, Mosasaurus missouriensis and others.

This large creature with sharp teeth advanced in the water with meandering movements and greedily hunted fish, oysters, crustaceans and cafalopods, opened its snout wide like a crocodile and grabbed the Prey at once, then swallowed it whole. His dentition was made up of numerous sharp teeth, he had a flexible joint on his lower jaw that allowed him to catch large pieces of meat.

According to the researchers, females during the breeding season took refuge in rivers, where the Young spent their early life. Its long tail was used for water propulsion, but also as a rudder.

He was a dangerous hunter even for other marine reptiles, which he followed and attacked greedily. He had a very developed sense of smell, but less visual acuity.

It is assumed that he was more of a surface swimmer and populated mostly coastal waters. The lesions that appear on the surface of the jaws show that they had a violent way of life, probably these creatures were fighting each other for the conquest of females and territory.

This species seems to have survived quite a bit, only 5 million years, its evolution abruptly interrupted at the end of the Cretaceous. Mosasaurus belongs to the order Squamata, family Mosasauridae.
