Origin

There are few pairs that decide to stay to nest with us, especially in the delta. The mottled duck prefers for nesting northern areas of Europe and winters in the Mediterranean Sea basin, the Black Sea and in Southern Asia.

In Romania, the motata prefer to winter in the coastal lakes area and in the Danube Delta as long as the surface of the lakes does not freeze completely. In the case of very cold winters, the Motata rate continues its migration route to the southern, warmer areas.

Feed rate motata

It procures its food by diving to the bottom of the water where it searches for aquatic vegetation, seeds, roots, etc.

Features motata rate

The duck has black and white feathers on the flanks and belly and the motul on the head is longer in early spring during mating. In summer, the White on the flanks turns light brown.

From a short distance you can see the Blue reflections on the head and some brown shades on the back and tail.

The eyes are yellow ,the beak is gray with black tip, the legs have a greenish-yellow coloration and the mirror on the wings is white.

The female mottled duck has dark brown plumage with lighter shades on the flanks and a small white spot at the base of the beak.

And the female has a small crest on the top of her head. There are also mottled duck specimens that do not exactly fit the species ' color standard, which is probably due to hybridization with other duck species.

The length of the mottled duck is 40-47 cm, the wingspan is 65-75 cm and the weight is 0.5 – 1 kg.

Reproduction rate motata

It builds its nest well hidden in the rich vegetation on the banks of the waters.

The female lays 8-11 greenish eggs in a single series per year, which she hatches for 24-26 days.
