Origin

The genus name melopsittacus comes from the Greek language and Means melodious parrot. Parakeets are nomadic birds found in open habitats primarily in Australian bushland, open woodland and grassland.

They are normally found in small groups, but can also form very large flocks under favorable conditions. The species is active and the movement of the bird masses is conditioned by the availability of food and water.

Feeding Parakeets

Parrots in the wild prefer to eat grass seeds, veterinarians recommend diets for birds kept in captivity that are supplemented with foods such as: fresh fruits and vegetables, germinated seeds, pasta and whole grain bread, boiled eggs and other healthy human foods.

Adding These Foods provides additional nutrients that prevent obesity.

It is good to remember that they do not always adapt to food additions. Chocolate and avocados are known to be toxic to parrots.

Most parrots prefer non-verbal communication, they scream and communicate by gestures when asking for seeds.

Features Parakeet Parrots

The parakeets are about 18 cm long and about 40 grams. Everyone knows that parakeets are found in most colors: white, red, green, blue, white, yellow, gray, etc.

As far as I know there are 8 types of parakeets (Alexandrine, Budgerians, Debyan, Estern, Indian Ringneck, Plum-headed, Quaker and Regent). Some have thin black and white stripes on the head and wings.

On their "beard", more precisely in the sides of the beak appear some pennies with age, pennies that indicate approximately what age each individual has.

Sexual dimorphism is very evident in parakeets, the difference between the sexes being basically by the color of the nostrils, males have blue nostrils, while females have brown nostrils. They can be differentiated after a certain period, at first they will both have pink nostrils.

Care should be taken when placing several female parakeets in the same place, as they can cause serious injuries. It is easier as the space is larger and in that space the number of males is approximately equal to the number of females.

Contrary to Moderna historical belief, modern literature agrees that parrots should not be kept alone. Loneliness affects them both mentally and physically, a species of parrot plucks all its feathers when stressed.

Parrots have their own personality and their own unique ideas about how much they like to be manipulated, what their favorite toys are, or what their favorite kind of music is if it is not indifferent to them.

Parrots generally clean themselves and do so very often by removing dust and dirt from their plumage, which is very important for flying. They show signs of affection for their peers and especially for their partner, feeding on each other through seed consumption and regurgitation. When they sleep they often make themselves comfortable and swell, it is a sign that the bird is quiet and sleeping a carefree sleep.

It is one of only two species of parrot considered truly domesticated. They have been bred in captivity since 1850. Breeders have worked for decades to produce a wide range of colors, patterns and mutations of feathers, such as blue, purple, olive, albino, sequined, crested, etc.

Parrots in general are not expensive, parakeets are most common because they are small and cute and their price is the lowest, around 20-30 ron.

Other species can reach thousands of lions, depending on rarity, size, etc.parakeets are intelligent animals that interact with humans, as well as with other parrots. A common behavior is that of chewing found mostly in females, a habit that is part of their instinct to build nests.

It is good to have twigs of natural wood if you have a wig so that it can occupy its time, preferably not thicker than a finger can cling to it.

Other toys can be balls, circles, swings, bells, etc.males can easily learn and reproduce dozens of words up to 1000 or more.

It is said that a parrot can achieve the intelligence of a 5-year-old child. A parrot named Puck holds the world record for the largest vocabulary of 1728 words.

Breeding Parakeets

During mating the male will stand on top and in many cases will pull the female by the ruffle. In captivity and not only they are easy to breed.

All species of parrots need a nest to breed. The female lays eggs like the hen, but if they are not fertilized, no chicks will emerge. Eggs appear every few days and usually no more than 2-3 in each nest.

Incubation lasts 18-20 days and at birth the chicks are totally helpless. They are born naked and their eyes open only after 10 days.

If you want to add rings to them it is good to do it somewhere every two weeks, they should be about 4mm.
