Origin

Peterbald is a relatively new breed of cat native to Russia.

The history of the Peterbald cat is simple. In 1988 a cat named Varya was found on the street in Russia by Irena Kovalyova. This one was hairless in part of her body. Genetic tests show that he has a gene that transmits hair loss.

Varya was mated with other breeds of short-haired cats and resulted in the Don Hairless breed.

In 1993 one of the puppies of this breed, Don Hairless was bred with an oriental cat by Olga Sergeyevna Mironova, a felinologist from Russia, and so the first 4 Peterbald puppies appeared in early 1994.

In 1996 Peterbald breed was recognized by the feline Federation of Russia, and a year later it is recognized worldwide. In 2003 the breed standard was officially adopted.

Appearance Peterbald

Peterbald is a medium-sized cat. The body is robust and muscular, the head is well proportioned in relation to the body, the ears are large and sharp. The eyes are relatively large and have a green or blue color. The skin is thin and slightly wrinkled. The weight of an adult cat is 4.5 kg.

The Peterbald cat may be confused with the Sphynx because it is a breed of hairless cat, but it has no other resemblance to the Sphynx cat. Genetically they are two different cats. Even though it is included in the category of furless cats most specimens have at least one fine fluff.

Lack of hair has a number of advantages and disadvantages. First of all the body has a higher temperature than cats with hair. Hair protects from hot and cold cat. Cats use more energy because they lose more heat.

They're always hot. Hairless cats can catch a cold more easily, but they are not as sensitive as they say because the body adapts to low temperatures.

Lack of hair eliminates brushing and some allergies. Long exposure to the sun should be avoided because it has sensitive skin. If you want to take it out in the summer you have to give it sun cream because it can suffer burns.

Peterbald Behaviour

Peterbald cats are intelligent and sociable. They are curious prefer the company of other cats or animals.

They are dedicated to their owners and are excellent companions that can be, unlike other cats, chosen by lovers who have never had cats before.

Peterbald cats use their paws a lot to grab objects. It is an active and playful cat that if it has something to do does not get bored. It is not recommended to stay alone for long periods of time. They are easily attached to people and need attention.

Peterbald is not an aggressive cat. She does not like to bite or scratch, but she will do it if she is disturbed.

Peterbald Features

Peterbald cat gives birth to puppies that often have open eyes.

Puppies, at birth, can have hair of 5 types: normal similar to an oriental cat, velour (the size of the hair is 1-2 cm and is rare), fluff (the hair is very short and soft, only a few millimeters), ultrabald (the cat is born without hair and does not even grow them) or brush (the hair is wavy, often wiry).

Food and meat should be low in fat to avoid the appearance of oily skin and secretions from the ears. They are gourmets and will never refuse something tasty. The great appetite is due to the large amount of energy they consume.

Peterbal cat if he doesn't get enough food, his body temperature drops because he has nothing to keep warm with. A healthy cat has clean and pleasant to the touch skin.

Depending on the breeder, it is recommended to wash less or more often in accordance with the environment in which he lives. The environment must be clean because dust and other microbes get directly on the skin. Eyes can get irritated from environments that are not clean and tear.

The standard allows all varieties of colors and patterns, including cats that have white.

If the Sphynx requires a pair to give birth to hairless Cubs, Peterbald requires only one parent. Today it is allowed to breed Peterbald cats only with cats of Oriental shorthair and Siamese breeds.

Peterbald Diseases

Having no hair does not mean that they are completely exposed to colds or other diseases. It is true that it is a special cat and needs a little atypical care.

In the 20 years since the founding of the breed, there have been no diseases or ailments that go out of print.

Peterbald cat is considered healthy and Hardy.
