Origin
The Rat Terrier breed is native to America. Although it is a rare breed, it is generally a common breed on farms in America from the 1920s to the 1930s. The name of this breed was given by the 26th president of America, Theodore Roosevelt.
The breed originally appeared in 1820 in the UK as a result of crossing between Fox terrier and Manchester terrier. Then it was brought to america and in 1910 it was improved to be faster, crossing with the Italian Whipet and Greyhound breeds.
In other areas of the country other breeders crossed the breed with beagles to improve hunting skills. The resulting breed, which can be found today, is healthy, intelligent and adaptable. Meanwhile, a miniature variety emerged resulting from crossing with chihuahua.
The breed was officially recognised by the UKC on 1 January 1999 and by the AKC on 1 July 2010. Today the breed is recognized by several canine clubs (APRI, UKC, CKC, NKC, UKCI, NRTR, ACR, RTCI, RTBA, ACR, DRA, etc.)
It can be found in foreign literature under the following names: American Rat Terrier, Ratting Terrier, Decker Giant, RT, Rat, Rattie, etc.
Feeding Rat Terrier
Rat Terrier is in active dog that consumes a lot of energy. The meals of this dog are somewhat larger than other breeds of its size. It needs quality protein, vitamins and minerals. At least 30% of protein must come from meat, fish or both. In addition to meat, carbohydrates should be found in the food.
The health of the dog can be seen in the health of the coat and the level of activity. Beware of food because, although it is a breed that tolerates food much better, there is a chance of developing allergies to a food or two.
It is recommended to keep the animal under observation if you give it grain, corn or soybean feed for longer. They are not recommended in large quantities because his stomach digests these foods harder. With age the energy level decreases and you have to adapt the amount of food according to your needs.
In the cold period, such as winter, you can supplement the portions of food with fat. Water should be at your discretion so that the quadruped can quench his thirst when he feels the need.
He is used to hunting rodents so don't be surprised if you see him chasing squirrels, Gophers or other animals.
