Origin

It is a very ancient breed descended from the Egyptian Greyhound. A skeleton of a similar dog has been discovered in northern Syria and dates back to 2500 B.C. It was bred by Arab tribes to hunt gazelles and rabbits.

It was originally called the Persian Grey Greyhound, and the name Saluki was given to it after the Arab city of Saluk. It first appeared in Europe at a canine exhibition in 1909 in England. He became better known thanks to Count von Schublember from the German embassy in Tehran who managed to bring some copies and present them at the exhibition organized in 1926 in Amsterdam.

The Saluki dog is one of the oldest dogs domesticated by man. According to a 2004 study published in the journal Science, DNA analysis identified this breed as one of the first breeds to find a place near the Human home, and one of the few breeds that still share genes with the Wolf.

Drawings depicting Saluki dogs have been discovered in Susa and Sialk, Iran, with inscriptions dating from 3500 B.C., and other drawings from Egyptian tombs dating from 2100 B.C.

The breed was imported to England before 1840 but it really developed in 1895 with the interest in these dogs shown by Florence Amherst (daughter of the first baron Amherst of Hackney). It decided that the Saluki deserved more recognition from mankind, focusing in particular on the popularization of these dogs, helping to recognize the breed by The Kennel Club of Great Britain in 1923.

Saluki Food

Dogs of this breed are particularly gluttonous, but nevertheless have the quality of eating exactly as much as they need, without becoming greedy.

They are very fond of quality food, so you will find yourself in the situation of seeing that he refuses to feed, if he does not like what is given to him at the table.

As a way of feeding, they less like to eat from a bowl or other similar container, preferring that the food be placed directly on the ground.

Saluki Appearance

It is a large, muscular, slender, elegant dog. It has a long, narrow head, not very well emphasized stop, long muzzle, large nose, black or dark red.

The eyes are dark, oval, with very long eyelashes, characteristic of the breed. The ears are very long, mobile. The neck is long, supple, muscular. The back is slightly arched above the muscular halls. The tail is long, pinned down, borne arched.

The coat has a straight, silky hair and is longer at the ears, tail and hind legs. There is also a short-fur variety in these areas. It can be any color, with or without white.

Both male and female weigh between 16 and 30 kg. The male measures between 58-71 cm while the female is somewhat smaller, having between 43-58 cm.

Saluki Behavior

Saluki is able to learn various things very easily because of his extraordinary intelligence. He is very loyal and attached to his master or family members.

He likes to be in the company of children, towards whom he shows a developed sense of protection. She can't stand strangers and no other animals.

She doesn't bark at worthless things or ordinary sounds and likes to spend time in the house with her family. If left alone, the Saluki dog feels depressed.

If you are going to buy such a dog you must be well informed about the temperament, character and training of this dog. It will be much easier for you to raise and care for him once you read and learn all these things.

Do not forget that a dog needs your daily attention for a harmonious development and a healthy life, free from diseases.

Saluki is a very athletic dog, so the owner needs to take him out to exercise daily. Even if it is not a very active dog, it must be provided with a space where it can move freely. Being an apartment dog needs regular walks.

It should never be allowed to get bored because it will start digging or destroying different objects in the House. It should also not be left around other animals because the character of a born hunter will eventually emerge.

Saluki Dressage

The more intelligent they are, the more independent they become, so the intelligence they have can often work against the one who trains them. Always remember that they come from independent animals and were bred to be independent hunters, to bring prey to their master when he is not hunting.

Whenever they see a rabbit, for example, they will immediately start hunting it, succeeding almost every time, and this behavior cannot be changed.

They also really like to play with you, because they instinctively realize that you have no chance of catching them if they do not want to answer your call.

As for exercise, it should exceed two hours a day. By the age of 10-12 months they should be restricted so as not to injure themselves. After 12 months, daily walks of 6-10 km are more than recommended, especially if they represent a mixture of regular walking and running.

Few things are more beautiful than watching the movement of a Saluki running at full capacity, but be careful where you let them do so, because they can easily disappear from the landscape. After exercise, he will find the most comfortable place in the house, where he will Nestle and fall asleep.

Saluki Features

It feels best in a cramped yard where it can move at will.

It is recommended for an active person with experience in dog breeding.

In the house he is generally quiet, but outside he likes to run in open spaces or beside a bicycle.

It should not be forgotten that once he has seen something he wishes to hunt, he no longer obeys the master.

Like the rest of the dogs need socialization and proper training.

Saluki Diseases

Saluki is a dog that has been rid of most of its hereditary problems for some time.

Partly because of the centuries that have spread over its existence, partly because of the efforts made by breeders to eradicate the issues under discussion.

Some problems developed on the basis of Psychosomatics, affecting the stomach and skin of the breed, remained in question, therefore this dog must always have company.

Another problem is that of anesthetics, to which it does not always respond very well.
