Origin
Although it is not bred in captivity except in very special conditions, we allowed ourselves to present it, because specimens of this breed have been found on our coast and it is not admissible not to know it and not to be able to identify it if we meet it.
The waist is generally large, so adults can reach even 1.2 m. and a weight of up to 200 Kg. This species lives in the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and sometimes enters the Black Sea, from where it can accidentally reach and near the Romanian beaches.
As a peculiarity, we can recall that in the youth phase, her shell has 3 hulls, and in old age, the hull is slightly bulging, and the posterior edge is cut and covered with horny plates placed side by side, without overlapping.
Feeding sea turtle
This turtle is omnivorous, feeding on fish and other marine animals, but also on algae or various marine plant components.
Features sea turtle
The head is large, with powerful jaws, and the forelimbs in The Shape of a paddle, are provided with two claws. The color on the dorsal side is reddish-brown, and the plastron has a yellow color in adult animals and almost black in youth.
Species rarely found in our country, can still be seen at the Museum of the Danube Delta in Tulcea, where is exhibited a specimen caught at St. George. St. George's cathedral in 1968, as well as the Navy Museum in Constanta.
Breeding sea turtle
Exclusively marine species, during the breeding season it moves to certain beaches in the tropical and subtropical area, where at about 50 m. of water lays eggs in pits dug in the sand, which then covers them and beats them with the help of plastron.
After 2-3 months they hatch, and the chicks immediately start to the water, the only chance of survival being the quick contact with the aquatic environment.
