The breed has been known under various names: Perro de Agua, Turco Perro, Laneto, Perro de Lanas, Patero perro, Rizado Perro, Churro, Barbeta, Spanish Water Dog and most recently Perro de Agua Espanol.

In Spain water dogs were used mainly for herds of sheep and goats. Over time it spread throughout the country and was used to catch and bring waterfowl, hunting and Mountain Games.

Fishermen in the northern part of Spain preferred two-colored dogs because they were easier to see in the water, and farmers preferred black or dark brown specimens because they were easier to observe in the field.
