Origin

The species is native to South America (Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Mato Grosso), but populations of nanday parrots in freedom have also been observed in North America (Florida, California).

In their natural habitat, nanday Parrots usually live in small groups of 6-40 individuals, preferring savannas, but also wooded areas near human settlements, where they spend a lot of time in trees or on the ground, scavenging for food.

They often gather in flocks of about 300 specimens, often together with the monk parrot (Myiopsitta monachus), which can cause serious damage to cultivated areas.

It can be found in literature or other countries by scientific name or under one of the following names: the Nanday Parakeet, Black-hooded Parakeet or Nanday Conure.

Feeding Parrot Nanday

Seeds, fruits, grains, vegetables and even small insects and larvae make up their diet in nature.

It prefers open areas and savanna, and in some areas of Africa it is considered harmful due to the high appetite and the large number of specimens that feed on some crops.

Features Parrot Nanday

The nanday parrot is distinguished by its slender body and long tail. The plumage is green, and the flight feathers and tail are edged with black and blue. Nanday parrots have a black facial mask and head, hence the name black-hooded parrot.

The beak is black and the legs are beige-brown. On the thighs it shows feathers of red-orange color, and the eyes are dark brown.

As pet birds, nanday parrots are sought after for their intelligence and cheerfulness. However, they are not recommended birds for everyone.

Nanday is noisy, screaming and has a loud, resounding voice. It is a parrot that needs a lot of attention and mental stimulation to avoid developing behavioral problems.

They love to fly and this pleasure should not be taken away from them because it will make them unhappy. Nanday parrots reach sexual maturity at the age of 3 years.

Chicks have paler colored plumage than adults, have an entirely black beak and shorter tail. Adults show a dark brown band on the edge of the beak.

They nest in tree hollows where they lay 3-4 eggs. After several weeks when the young begin to emerge from the Beadle to explore nature, they become a big family and stay together until the next mating cycle.
