Origin

The species Scophthalmus maeoticus Trieste in the Black Sea in the sand along the entire length of the coastline.

Depending on the species and area turbot has different names: kalkan, Black Sea turbot.

Turbot Feed

When they are small, they feed on crabs, mollusks, shrimps and fish fry.

Adults feed only on fish: gobies, bacaliari, horse mackerel, blue scrubs, etc.

Turbot Appearance

As you can see in the pictures, turbot has a rhombus-shaped body. On the body of adults appear Bony tubercles with extensions of the shape of a spike.

The mouth is oblique, and the teeth are placed in several rows. The eyes are placed only on the upper part of the body.

Juveniles and juveniles have sand color and a series of spots that help them camouflage more easily and escape predators. With time the color darkens to a dark brown-brick.

The underside is light, almost white.

The usual length is 60-70 cm. Rarely exceeds 1 m, and the weight of 6-7 kg, rarely 10 kg. It is a fish that grows relatively slowly: after 10 years it reaches 55 cm in length and 3.5 kg in weight.

Turbot Behavior

In winter it descends to depths of 60-70 cm, but in summer it can be found at Waters of 20-30 cm.

Like most Pisces likes to sit in jokes. The more food is available, the larger Shoals can be encountered.

During the spawning period it comes to shallow depths and can be caught by anglers on a fishing rod.

Features Turbot

Turbot is a fish that stands out with some unique things.

First of all the rhombus-shaped body shape. Another interesting thing is that it is sought after for taste. It is among the tastiest fish in the world. It is recommended grilled fried with a white wine.

Since 2013, if I'm not mistaken, in Constanta was founded the first breeding of turbot fish. A kilo of turbot costs between 60 and 90 lei.

Breeding Turbot

Turbot spawns when the water has a temperature of 13-15 degrees.

It reaches sexual maturity and can reproduce starting at the age of 5-6 years.

After spawning, the Turbot Shoals break and the fish scatter in search of food.
