Facts
Habitat: urban areas, hills, plains, forests, etc.
Turturica (Streptopelia turtur) is a migratory bird found from Turkey and Northern Africa to Scandinavia and Russia where they are quite rare.
According to statistics from 2007, the population of turtles in Europe has decreased in recent years by 62%. This is due to habitat destruction and hunting of birds during migration.
Turtledove Feed
To feed, the turtle prefers plain and hilly areas near agricultural areas where it finds seeds and cereals.
Features Turtledove
Smaller and thinner than pigeons, turtles are 25-30 cm long, 47-55 cm wingspan and weight 80 – 170g.
The European turtle can be easily recognized by the gray-brown color on the back and wings and by the black spot with white stripes on the side of the neck.
The tail seen from above is dark brown to black, and underneath is white. It can be easily seen when the bird drinks water or is in flight.
The beak is black in color. The legs are red.
It is a bird that, unlike the gaita that prefers dense forests, it prefers open places of hills and plains.
It can occasionally be seen between shrubs or through gardens. It is a shy bird possibly because it is hunted during migration.
Flight ii is described as saggy although not particularly fast. They announce the arrival of spring through the Deep vibrations "turrrr, turrrr", hence the name turturica. It arrives in April and leaves in September.
It can be found in many popular songs about love and friendship. She is a symbol of love.
Turtle Breeding
It is a monogamous species that lays eggs twice a year. The nest is arranged at low height, only 2-3m in bushes or trees at the bifurcation of a few branches.
A nest is arranged as a platform of twigs, in the style specific to pigeons.
The incubation is only 14 days, the chicks staying in the nest only two weeks, then another week on the branches in the nest apriparia. At the age of one month of birth they are considered good fliers.
Unfortunately this beautiful bird is also hunted with shotguns. The most common methods are pandas at feeding sites and drinking water. It is appreciated for its very fast flight and tasty Varna.
It is often confused with gugustiucul that looks a lot, but if you look more closely you can see the elements that differentiate them. First, it is smaller and thinner.
