The Pine Marten - an interesting animal in Romania's fauna

The Pine Marten (Martes foina) is a small and agile animal that belongs to the family Mustelidae. It is a native species in Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa and can be found in numerous habitats, such as forests, plains, mountainous regions, and even in urban areas. In Romania, it is one of the most widespread mammal species, which makes it a worthy subject to explore in this article.

Description and physical appearance

The Pine Marten has a body length between 40 and 55 centimeters, and when adding the tail, the total measurement reaches around 80 centimeters. As for weight, it varies between 0.7 and 1.5 kilograms, with females being smaller than males.

The Pine Marten's fur is reddish-brown with white patches on the throat and chest. These whitish patches can vary in size and intensity from individual to individual. The Pine Marten's tail is long, usually reaching a quarter to a third of the total body length, and like the rest of its fur, it is light-colored at the base and darkens to black at the tip.

Feeding and behavior

The Pine Marten is an omnivorous animal, feeding on both meat and plants. It can hunt small rodents, insects, birds, reptiles, and other small animals. It also feeds on various fruits and seeds found in its environment.

An interesting characteristic of the Pine Marten is that it builds its own territory, which it fiercely defends. A male's territory can cover up to 150 hectares, while females have slightly smaller territories. These animals mark their territories using special glands located in the anal area, secreting a specific scent to mark their territory boundaries.

Reproduction and life cycle

The breeding period of the Pine Marten takes place during winter, between February and March. During this time, males search for mates and engage in violent fights to win over a female.

After a gestation period of approximately 280 days, the female Pine Marten gives birth to usually one to six cubs in a den built in trees. The cubs will spend the first few weeks of their lives in this den under the protection of their mother before venturing out to explore their surroundings.

The Pine Marten reaches sexual maturity at around one year old, but often the cubs choose to remain in the vicinity of their mother for a while longer. The average lifespan of the Pine Marten is estimated to be around 7-10 years in the wild, although it can live up to 15 years in captivity.

Species conservation

The Pine Marten is protected by law in Romania and in numerous other European countries. However, the Pine Marten population has significantly declined in recent decades due to the destruction of its natural habitat and uncontrolled hunting. Additionally, environmental pollution and urbanization have led to a decrease in the number of Pine Martens in urban areas.

To protect and conserve the species, the implementation of conservation measures is necessary, such as creating suitable habitats, promoting education, and raising public awareness about the importance of Pine Marten conservation.

In conclusion, the Pine Marten is one of the interesting mammals found in Romania, representing a true treasure of our fauna. With proper conservation efforts, we can ensure that the Pine Marten continues to thrive in the wild and bring joy and value to the ecosystem it belongs to.

Facts

In America, the weasel (Mustela nivalis) is a domestic animal by definition – there are no Wild Weasels except in the north of America, but they too have been left in the wild by man, are not dangerous and hunting instincts are sorely lacking.

Weasel Food

Weasel needs food rich in protein, it is predominantly carnivorous, you can use dry food for cats but pay attention to the protein concentration (be over 32%) and the amount of magnesium to be low, they do not need much magnesium in the diet.

They are big lovers of peanuts, popcorn (but unsalted), bananas, peanut butter. But these foods do not constitute their daily meal, they are just dessert and do not give them in large quantities. Under no circumstances do not give them chocolate or caffeinated products, they may "beg" but do not be impressed; although we do not affect the consumption of chocolate, weasel may have unpleasant.

In the wild it hunts rabbits, mice, birds, frogs, squirrels and other small animals. It can often be found standing guard at the burrows of the animals it hunts.

He usually hunts at night; he kills his prey by biting it by the back of the head. Poultry farmers don't like weasels because they can kill a few birds in a single attack, but weasels are also useful animals because they feed on mice and other rodents harmful to humans.

Weasel Appearance

The weasel has a thin, elongated and very flexible body. The eyes are large, bulbous and dark. The legs and tail are relatively short, less than half the length of the body.

Legs end with sharp claws. Each individual usually has 4 pairs of nipples, but only those from females are visible.

The length and size of the species differ depending on the region. Males can be 1.5 times larger than females. The tail varies and it constitutes 13 to 30% of the body length of the animal. The average length in males is 13 – 26cm, and in females 11-20cm.

The coat is dense, short and soft. The upperparts are darker in colour and vary geographically from dark reddish to sand coloured.

The lower parts, lower jaw, lower sides of the legs and belly are white in color.

Weasel Behavior

The weasel is a ferocious animal despite its small size and a swift animal.

It is a professional hunter moving virtually unheard of up close to the prey and then pouncing on the victim.

Some people think the weasel smells worse than a skunk because of its glands. He has as enemies snakes, hawks and owls.

It's bruising for the gorgeous fur. It is known for its aggressiveness by many animals. Some believe that the weasel kills for no reason even when it is not hungry. They're as curious as raccoons.

He puts his head in every hole and scours every Grove, looks after every tree.

Ferrets and minks are his cousins.

Breeding Weasel

The mating period of weasels is in April – July. The gestation period lasts 34-37 days. In the northern hemisphere the average of puppies is 6 "balls" per season that reach maturity in 3-4 months.

Males can mate in the first year of life, which is not usually successful.

Puppies are pink at birth, they are naked, blind and deaf. At only 4 days they begin to grow soft and fluffy fur that protects them.

At 10 days you can see the difference between the coat colors, the upper part and the lower part of the white color. After 2-3 weeks, milk teeth appear, but breastfeeding can last even 12 weeks.

The eyes and ears are fully functional around the age of 4 weeks, and by 8 weeks the hunting instinct is developed.

After 12 weeks everyone starts to go their own way.
