Origin
The American curl Breed appeared in 1981, in Lakewood, California, when a black cat, with long silky hair and unusual ears, appeared at the door of the Ruga family.
She was fed and welcomed into the house, and the Masters called her Shulamith. In December 1981 she gave birth to 4 kittens of which 2 had bent ears.
The Masters contacted a geneticist to study the phenomenon and it was confirmed that the unusual ear, probably inherited, is a genetic mutation.

Appearance American Curl Cat
The American curl cat is medium-sized, has a soft, silky coat that sticks to the body.
American curl is the unique breed of cats with ears bent back. At birth kittens have straight ears, and after 3-4 days they begin to bend reaching the final shape at the age of 4 months.
At this age the professional breeder can determine the quality of the cat, based on the degree of bending of the ears, correlated with the type of body.
Maintaining the fur of an American curl kitten will not give you much hassle, just brush it 1 (short hair) – 2 (long hair) times a week to prevent it from getting tangled and remove dead hairs.
Its carcateristic ears are those that need increased attention: at least once a month they need to be carefully cleaned, so as not to irritate the cartilage of the pavilion, hard, but thin and delicate.
American Curl Cat Behavior
In terms of personality, the American Curl is a people-oriented, faithful and affectionate breed. Having a nosy and curious temper, he assists his human companions in whatever they intend to do.
American Curl loves the company of people and adapts extremely quickly with any other type of animal, children or new situations. Although they are considered to be intelligent cats, they retain their kitten behavior even into adulthood.
In addition to being available in both short and long fur coats, American Curl cats can be of any color or pattern of fur. Eyes can also have a whole palette of colors.
Features American Curl Cat
The distinctive feature of this breed is the unique shape of the ears. The ears are quite stiff to the touch, raised and open, bending in a slight arc.
The ears of the American Curl breed have been compared to those of the Lynx, with long tufts of hair accentuating the bending appearance of the ears.
Care must be taken when handling the ears to avoid cartilage rupture.
When born, the ears are straight, but 3-4 days after birth, the ears begin to bend back.
During the first 4 months of life, the ears of kittens gradually bend, to varying degrees, until the final shape is established at the age of 4 months.
Around this age, the professional breeder can determine the quality of the cat, based on the degree of bending of the ears, correlated with body type.
