There are three categories of this breed, which together meet the needs of the inhabitants. All three are descended from an original race.
The one with the largest gauge is used for traction, and history says that they were very robust and muscular. The breeton branch is part of a fine breed resulting from a crossed one.
Breton Corlay, now a little-known breed, is the most massive of the three categories. In the past this breed was considered a common breed, because they resembled riding horses.
The Breton breed is native to Brittany in northwestern France. Most likely, the ancestor of this breed is related to the Breton through the Somnier, which leads to the Little Horses of the Black Mountains, which descended from medieval horses.
Breton was also crossed with Boulonnais and Percheron, as well as the Ardennais massif, to create a larger and stronger horse. In the mid-nineteenth century, the influence of the Norfolk Roadster breed was introduced. No further infleunta was allowed after 1920.

Breton Horse Behavior

Postier, which resulted from the crossbreeding with the Norfolk Roadster, was a lightweight, compact and powerful all-wheel drive horse. Breton horses are excellent trotters and do very well when harnessed.
The breed was recognized in France and was exported including to Japan and the Balkans. The Breton horse is an excellent horse for improving breeds.
