Origin

Due to its beauty, intelligence, popularity and huge appearance it suffered as a population in the wild. Regarding the natural habitat, opinions are divided, some say that they live in tropical forests, while others believe that they prefer more open areas.

The hyacinth parrot became popular as soon as it was discovered, being used for entertainment. Unfortunately it did not get to become popular like other species due to the low number of specimens to only about 2000 in the wild.

It has been on the Endangered Species List since 1988 and huge conservation efforts are being made.

Feeding The Hyacinth Parrot

They have a very strong beak for eating natural foods that include walnut kernels and seeds.

Powerful beaks can even break coconuts. More eat berries and other vegetable matter.

Pine nuts are one of the most popular foods.

They need a higher fat diet than most parrots.

They are said to hunt and consume a small amount of meat.

Features Hyacinth Parrot

Hyacinth parrot has a wingspan of almost 5m.they are of an amazing cobalt blue, have the color of hyacinth, hence their name.

The yellow skin around the eyes and beak uncovered with feathers seem to make them smile. The beak is large and powerful.

In captivity, a cage torments them. Having a huge wingspan for a parrot needs more room. The wire of the cage should not be thin because the strong beak of the parrot will easily chew it.

The interior must be arranged with wooden legs so that the bird can gnaw and feel as much as possible as in freedom. It can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, but it is good to be protected.

Hyacinth parrots feel the need for a longer and more frequent communication from the family to which it belongs. They need affection and you can also be playful. In the Wild this is they spend their time in flocks.

He likes to be in the center of attention and play, he is gentle despite the strong beak. He is eager to have company and offer company, likes to learn new things and responds well to orders. He loves to be manipulated and is comical, always eager to play, sits on his back with his claws and likes to be caressed on his stomach.

Breeding Hyacinth Parrot

Hyacinth parrots are very related to their pair.

They share their tasks, build the nest and raise the chicks together. They usually nest in tree hollows.

The female lays two eggs which she hatches for 26-28 days.

For captive specimens it is good to provide them with more food than usual and still fresh water daily.
