Compared to the tail of an ordinary cat, the American Bobtail cat has a very small tail, the result of a natural genetic change that affects only this extremity of the feline.

According to urban legends, these felines would have arisen from a mix between a domestic cat and a wild cat. Yodie, a male with short brown hair, mated with a wild cat and was the world's first Bobtail cat.

The unusually small tail is the result of a spontaneous genetic mutation among domestic cats, or some breeders attribute it to the dominant gene seen in Manx cats.

Breeders have perfected the breed so that today we meet the American Bobtail cat in a rich variety of colors and sizes.

It is a breed accepted by the International Cat Association since 1989, owners of American Bobtail can participate in various national and international feline exhibitions.
