It is also called the wood duck.
Feed The Carolina Rate
The Carolina duck (or wood duck) eats a wide variety of foods.
Their diet consists of seeds, fruits, aquatic invertebrates, various plants and weeds.
Before mating it eats mainly insects(e.g. dragonflies) rich in calcium and protein necessary for the production of eggs.
Features Carolina Rate
A typical adult is about 48 cm in length with an average wingspan of 73 cm. About three-quarters the length of a wild adult.
The adult duck has distinctive plumage, multicolored rays and red eyes. The duck is less colorful, with a white eye and a whitish ring at the throat. Both genera at maturity have notched heads.
When swimming, the Caroline Ducks kick their heads back and forth in a jerking motion, making them easy for flight.
Their personality is shy and skittish.
Breeding Rate Carolina
Their breeding habitat is in forested swamps, shallow lakes, ponds, and bays in eastern North America, the west coast of the United States and western Mexico. They usually nest in cavities in trees close to water, although they will take advantage of nesting in damp places if available.
The Nest will be about 30cm in diameter. The female will lay one cream – white egg per day. In total it will lay 10 to 22 eggs.
A number of predators will try to eat the eggs of the Carolina duck: raccoons, woodpeckers, snakes, rats, etc.
From the moment the eggs hatch it will be 24h until the chicks are dry and fluffy. Then the female takes her cubs and goes into the water in search of food.
Chicks will be able to fly after 8-10 weeks after birth.
