Facts

Other names: Catahoula Hog Dog, Catahoula Hound, Catahoula Leopard Dog , Leopard Dog, Louisiana Catahoula

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is a medium-large, short-coated dog known for its varied colors and patterns of clothes and eyes. The word catahoula is of Choctaw origin and is translated means "sacred lake". Catahoulas are the only breed of dog that has emerged in the history of the state of Louisiana.

The breed requires firm guidance and early socialization, as they can be independent, territorial and protective. For the same reasons, they do not allow ill-treatment and will self-defend. Once they know their place in the family unit, they are affectionate, loyal and gentle. Also called Catahoula Hog Dog, they are used as hunting dogs, Bay dogs, tree dogs, guard dogs, guard dogs and, of course, loyal companions.

Catahoula Leopard Feed

The Catahoula Leopard dog should do well on a high-quality dog food product, whether commercially manufactured or home-prepared, with the supervision and approval of the veterinarian. Any diet should be appropriate for the age of the dog (puppy, adult or senior). Some dogs are prone to being overweight, so watch your dog's caloric intake and weight level. Treatment can be an important aid in training, but giving too much can cause obesity. Learn about which human foods are safe for dogs and which are not. Check with your vet if you have any concerns about your dog's weight or diet. Clean and fresh water should be available at all times.

Catahoula Leopard Appearance

Beyond the usual weekly care, the occasional bath will keep the Catahoula clean and show you the best quality. Grooming can be a wonderful bonding experience for you and your dog.

Strong, fast-growing rattan breeds need to be cleaned regularly with a nail clipper or a grinder to avoid overgrowing, splitting and cracking. Ears should be checked regularly to avoid the accumulation of wax and debris, which can lead to infection. Teeth should be brushed regularly.

The Catahoula Leopard dog needs space to expend its energy and always needs a job. Not suitable for the city or as an apartment dog. Without an adequate amount of exercise and attention, he will begin to cause problems in digging and drilling.

Options for exercise could include playing time in the backyard, preferably fenced off, or taking walks several times a day. Outdoor activities such as swimming, hiking, and recovering flying balls or discs can also provide a good starting point for expansion energy.

Note: he is an excellent swimmer! Training for dog sports such as agility, obedience and rallying can also be a great way to give your dog exercise.

Catahoula Leopard Dressage

Without training and mental stimulation, this breed can become destructive in the House. Due to its independence and territorial instincts, becoming socialized is also very important for Catahoula to be a gentle and affectionate companion in the House. Although they work as an adult at the age of 10 months, Catahoulas are not matured until the age of 2 years. Therefore, it is important that all jobs and exercises are fun so as not to cause burns at too young an age.

Catahoula Leopard Diseases

Problems such as hip dysplasia, deafness and eye problems occasionally occurred at Catahoula Leopard Dog. Some dogs may face these health challenges in their lives, but most of this breed are healthy dogs.

Working with a responsible breeder, those who want to own a Catahoula Leopard Dog can get the education they need to know about specific health concerns within the breed. Good breeders use genetic testing of breeding stock to reduce the likelihood of disease in their offspring.
