Origin

It is considered to be the Royal cat of Thailand.

Based on historical Thai manuscripts, it is known that King Rama V, who reigned from 1868 to 1910, had nine cats of this breed. The King cared so much for these cats that he decreed a law whereby anyone caught stealing such a cat was sentenced to death.

The spread of cats with eyes of different colors, inspired the name for this breed: Khao Manee, which means white gem.

The Breed grew in popularity when an American cat breeder named Colleen Freymouth imported Sripia, a female Khao Manee to the U.S. and later a male.

In 1999. Thus, Colleen was the only person outside Thailand to breed this breed.
